Ochre and rust walls fall away on both sides of the gorge, with a pale waterfall and a thread of blue-green river far below and dark pines gripping the crags. Thomas Moran first rode into Yellowstone with a survey party in 1871, sketching in pencil and adding colour back at camp; the work that came of it helped persuade Congress to make the place a national park the following year.
The rock is one long gradation from apricot to charcoal with almost no hard edge, so it comes together by shade, working down from the storm sky. Finished size 73.6 x 50.8cm.
Dramatic canyon landscape with varied rock textures and colour gradients, though large sky and water areas add moderate challenge.
