5 difficulty ratings based on image complexity
Find your perfect
challenge
Difficulty isn't just about piece count — it's about the image. Bold colours and distinct sections are easy to sort. Subtle gradients and repetitive patterns push even experienced puzzlers. We rate every puzzle so you know what you're getting into.
Very Easy
Big, bold colour blocks with obvious edges and distinct sections. Think bright cartoons, simple patterns, and childrens illustrations. You can sort pieces by colour at a glance — satisfying progress from the very first piece.
Easy
Clear colour variation with recognisable landmarks in the image. Moderate detail but plenty of distinct areas to anchor your progress. Colourful village scenes, garden illustrations, and patterned designs.
Medium
A good mix of detail and colour variation. Some trickier areas balanced by clear focal points and distinct sections. This is where most puzzlers find their sweet spot — challenging enough to be rewarding, achievable enough to enjoy.
Hard
Complex imagery with subtle colour transitions and fewer obvious anchor points. Large areas of similar tones, intricate fine detail, and images that demand you study each piece carefully. Strategy and patience pay off.
Very Hard
The ultimate image challenge. Vast skies, ocean horizons, snow scenes, dense forests, or monochromatic artwork. These images fight you at every turn — similar colours, repetitive patterns, and very few visual clues. Deeply rewarding when complete.
Our difficulty ratings are based on the image, not the piece count. A 1,000-piece puzzle bursting with colour and distinct sections can be much easier than a 500-piece puzzle of a cloudy sky. Look at the image and think: can I easily sort the pieces by colour? Are there obvious landmarks to build around? That will tell you more than the number on the box.
