Hundreds of bicycles, racked two deep along a red barrier, parked outside the only floating flower market in the world. Behind them the Bloemenmarkt stalls are glass sheds packed with tulip bulbs and seed packets, the canal houses lean at their usual companionable angles, and a red sign on the lamppost points the way to free supervised parking.
Then the sky goes up in flames. It is a photograph, so every bicycle really is a different bicycle — the gabled houses and the market stalls give you the structure, and the bikes take the time. Finished size 70 x 50cm.
The sky is one broad graded wash of orange and the bicycles are a hundred near-identical dark frames, so most of the puzzle sits in two hard areas. The gabled houses and the glass stalls are where to start.
