Five trick-or-treaters have made it as far as the gate and no further. There's a pirate, a cowboy, a witch in red stripes, a skeleton and two little ghosts under sheets that don't quite reach the ground, all lined up outside a stone mansion with every window lit orange. The house itself is doing its best to put them off — a full moon behind the turret, a skeleton dangling from the bare branches, bats crossing the sky, and a sign nailed to the fence that just says Boo.

It's a busy build. Pumpkins are lined along the wall in every size, the trees are a tangle of dark twigs, and there's a lot of autumn leaf litter to sort through on the pavement. The costumes give you good blocks of colour to work with first — the black and white stripes, the red dress, the orange pumpkins — before you tackle the stonework and the sky.

Good one to have out on the table in the run-up to Halloween, especially if you like your seasonal puzzles with a bit of story in them rather than just a plain jack-o'-lantern.
