Van Gogh painted this from memory rather than from life, which is why the garden behind the two women goes off at angles no garden does. They walk in the foreground in patterned shawls, a third figure stoops over the flowers behind, and the path curves away in a band of orange that has nothing to do with the green either side of it.
Broken pattern everywhere in strong flat colour with very little plain ground. Finished size 69 x 48cm.
Dense decorative brushwork across the whole canvas with the same dabs repeating everywhere.
