The great bronze matador stands with his back to the Roman amphitheatre at Nîmes, cape held out wide and falling to the ground in enormous metal folds, so that from below he looks twice the height of the arches behind him.

And what arches they are: two tiers of them running away round the curve in honey-coloured stone, weathered and patched and still standing. The sky above is a hard summer blue with a few white clouds sailing past.
