Poplar trunks in blue, mauve and grey-pink stand right across the picture, and between them a couple walk arm in arm, a man in a dark suit and hat beside a woman in pale green with a straw hat. Van Gogh painted it a month before his death. The white flowers in the grass were once pink and the blue trunks violet, the geranium lake he used having faded out of both.
Repeating vertical trunks over a floor of dabbed green, with the two small figures the only landmark in the picture. Finished size 64 x 50cm.
Van Gogh's heavy brushwork creates a uniformly textured green surface with subtle colour shifts that makes piece differentiation tough.
