Falls, Montreal River by J.E.H. MacDonald – 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle (Pomegranate)

White water pours down a rock channel between dark spruce and pale pink boulders, with a strip of blue river behind and a hillside beyond it worked in rust, ochre and mauve. J.E.H. MacDonald of the Group of Seven painted it in 1920, in short thick strokes that keep the whole scene moving.

The autumn hillside is the hard part, a mottled mass of dabbed colour with no clear shapes in it. Finished size 64 x 50cm.
