Newmarket's clock tower presides over a town in full race-day mode. A pale blue convertible is loaded with racegoers in summer finery, a horse box trundles past in the background, and on the pavement a golden retriever is getting more attention than anyone in a hat. Hot air balloons drift above the rooftops, the chestnut and lilac trees are in full bloom, and the sky is doing its best impression of a good English summer day.
Steve Crisp packs his scenes with the kind of incidental detail that makes a 1000-piece build genuinely enjoyable — spotting the barber's shop sign, the pigeons scattering overhead, or the man in the green checked suit who looks like he's absolutely certain of a winner. There's a lot going on, which means sorting is half the fun, but the strong colour contrasts between the blue car, the blossom trees, and the red brick tower keep you oriented throughout.
A Gibsons 1000-piece puzzle with the quality cut and fit the brand has been known for since 1919.
The scene contains intricate detail throughout — busy figures, blossom trees, architecture, vehicles, and a complex sky — with few large plain areas to anchor progress, and many similar mid-tones across the crowd and buildings.
