Victorian Green by Ray Cresswell - 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle (House of Puzzles)

A stagecoach pulls up outside the grocer's while a chimney sweep hauls his brushes down the lane and two ladies in bonnets skate across the frozen pond. Whitwick Green is caught mid-Victorian-Christmas, snow on every roof and a robin perched on the holly in the corner. There's a maid decorating the tree in the square, a snowman with a scarf and top hat, and a horse-drawn cart loaded with parcels outside the Three Crowns.

Ray Cresswell has packed the scene with these little stories, so it's a nice one for anyone who likes to work section by section rather than tackle it all at once. Start with the sky and rooftops, then work down into the crowd of skaters, carollers and shoppers milling around the green.

The mix of snow-white, deep green shopfronts and red coats makes for good colour sorting, while the period costume and horse-drawn traffic give it plenty of character. Good for a winter afternoon at the table with a pot of tea on the go.
