Van Gogh in a pale grey felt hat, painted in Paris in 1887, his ginger beard and moustache set against a background of blue-green strokes that fan out around his head. Green eyes, a dark olive jacket, a scrap of red and blue neckerchief at the collar.

The face comes together quickly; the background is the real work, since every piece there carries the same short blue and green dashes. Finished size 68.5 x 50.8cm.
