Mark Rothko's untitled oil of 1949: a soft-edged black rectangle across the middle, a plum band above it with a red seam at its top, a green and rust block below, and the whole thing floating on golden yellow.
No drawing and no landmarks, so this is a proper test — worked by tracking how the yellow warms and cools from edge to edge. Finished size 63.5 x 50.8cm.
Large blocks of uniform colour with soft blurred edges and minimal detail make this extremely challenging as there are very few distinguishing features between pieces.
