Jacob Lawrence's wedding, painted in 1948: the bride in scarlet and the groom in black stand close together on a red carpet before a minister in grey, stained glass in blue, green and yellow panes framing them either side and a wall of red and yellow flowers behind. Faces are painted almost as silhouettes.
Big flat shapes make the figures straightforward; the flowered backdrop is a mass of small red and yellow marks. Finished size 63.5 x 50.8cm.
The bold silhouetted figures against a busy multicoloured background with stained glass elements create complex colour transitions that are challenging to assemble.
