A vintage Mercedes van is airborne somewhere above the clouds, loaded so heavily it defies all logic. On the roof: a horse, a deck chair, a red telephone box, a small sailboat, washing strung on a line, and what appears to be a person going about their business entirely unbothered by the altitude. Below the van, a garden bench and a pair of fuel cans dangle on wires. The golden-orange sky and low sun give the whole thing a dusty, end-of-the-world warmth.
This is part of Heye's Fly High! series by artist Nathalie Bräutigam, and the surreal humour is very much the point. There's a lot to look at — each area of the van rewards a good squint — but the warm, unified colour palette means the build is less frantic than it first appears. The sky does most of the heavy lifting in terms of difficulty, with large areas of amber and cloud offering fewer obvious reference points than the chaotic cargo above.
Good one for a builder who likes a bit of a story in their puzzle. The finished image is the sort of thing that gets people stopping to ask questions.
The large expanses of warm amber sky and cloud offer very few distinct reference points, and the van itself has subtle rust tones that blend into the background, making sorting and placement genuinely tricky despite the busy scene.
