A dark-horned creature stands at the centre of this surreal forest scene — part horse, part zebra, part guinea fowl, its body a patchwork of black mane, bold stripes, and spotted feathers. It's a strange and striking hybrid, and it works. Around it, the jungle floor is thick with roses, tropical blooms, berries, yellow songbirds, and a lone blue butterfly, all set against a misty green woodland that fades into soft light behind the trees.
This is part of André Sanchez's Fauna Fantasies series for Heye — digitally composited collage work that layers botanical illustration with surreal animal forms. The result sits somewhere between a nature encyclopaedia and a dream. The detail is considerable: individual petals, spotted feathers, wisps of mist between trunks.
As a build, expect a good challenge. The central creature sorts easily enough, but the flower border blends whites, pinks, and yellows across a lot of pieces, and the misty background trees offer very little contrast to work with. One for an experienced puzzler who doesn't mind a slow, satisfying sort.
The misty, low-contrast background forest merges with the dense floral border across many similarly toned pieces, making large sections of the puzzle tricky to distinguish without clear reference points.
