She turns and looks back over her shoulder, and that is the whole painting. Vermeer gives her a blue and gold turban, a wet highlight on the lower lip, and the pearl at her ear that catches one point of light and is otherwise barely painted at all. Behind her there is nothing whatever, which is why she has never stopped working.
An almost black ground over half the board with the figure lit from one side. Finished size 48 x 69cm.
A large flat black background with no features in it, so all the progress is in the figure.
