Idealized Portrait of a Lady, 1480

A young woman in strict profile against a background of near-black, so still she might be carved. Her hair is the whole picture: red-gold, braided and coiled and pinned with strings of little turquoise beads, wound about with a pink ribbon, and a white plume standing straight up at the crown under a gold jewel.

A dark blue stone hangs at her throat on a fine gold chain, and her chemise is white striped with pale blue.
