She is lying back on a green velvet couch, propped up on white lace pillows with her hands behind her head, and she is looking directly out at whoever is standing in front of her. The gauzy white cover beneath her spills off the end of the couch in folds.
Everything behind is dark, so all the light in the painting lands on her and on the pale linen. Goya leaves you nowhere else to look.
Large dark background areas are challenging, but the figure and white fabric provide good contrast and detail.
