A blue rosette on red sits at the centre of a gold six-pointed star, ringed by scrolling blue and green acanthus, red tulips, purple and orange daisies and black cartouches picked out in tiny gold dots. Paul Heussenstamm painted the mandala as a carpet, down to the green and gold fringe running along all four sides.
The design mirrors both ways, so four quarters look near-identical and a piece can seem to belong in several places at once. Finished size 51 x 68cm.
Extremely intricate repeating mandala patterns with dense detail and similar colour areas throughout make piece differentiation very challenging.
