A baby in a pale blue gown falls head-first through Edward Gorey's crosshatched Edwardian hall while a woman leans over the mezzanine to pass down a note. Below, a crowd in plaid suits and striped skirts carries on: one man throws his arms up, two others wait with carpetbags, and gilt-framed landscapes hang on rose-patterned walls.
Nearly all of it is fine pen hatching in brown and grey, so the coloured clothes go in first and the panelling takes patience. Finished size 63.5 x 50.8cm.
Extremely detailed pen-and-ink illustration with predominantly dark muted tones and intricate crosshatching throughout makes piece differentiation very difficult.
