Edward Gorey's set design for the Broadway staging of Dracula, drawn entirely in pen cross-hatching. A fan-vaulted gothic hall of scaled stone, walls of bookshelves under pointed arches, a heavy curtain drawn back on a night sky, and Dracula himself in a black cloak beneath a domed doorcase — with urns, a lamp and a small figure perched along the shelf tops, and bats in the upper corners.
No colour anywhere, only hatching, so sorting comes down to stroke direction and density rather than tone. Finished size 60.9 x 45.7cm
Almost entirely monochrome black-and-white with extremely fine cross-hatching detail and minimal colour contrast throughout.
