A swagged olive curtain with gold fringe frames the stage: a ballerina in white on a green lawn, a topiary horse behind her, a crescent moon, a figure in black climbing a rope. Edward Gorey fills everything else — two winged angels carrying a striped layer cake and a jelly, ginger cats scaling the drapes, and on the steps below a skull-faced man in tails waltzing with a woman in purple while a blue devil watches from a red chair.
The pen line is fine and the washes are pale, so the fringed curtain and the flight of cream steps take most of the piece count. Finished size 68.6 x 50.8cm.
Detailed pen-and-ink illustration with muted tones, many small figures, and intricate crosshatching makes piece differentiation challenging.
