The Little Snoring village fête has reached the serious part of the afternoon: the baking contest. The rules board has been very clear — no soggy bottoms, no buying cakes from the shops, no having your cake and eating it, no fingers in pies and, firmly, no biting. Three finalists have their best work out on the trestle table: a swan in white icing, a chocolate cake tall enough to want scaffolding, and a tower of pink and yellow battenberg. All three are smiling at the judge.
She is smiling back, and it is her afternoon you have to build — the view from her side of the table, and everything in front of it. On the evidence of the seagulls, the terrier and the boy going over the tablecloth, the rules are not being observed. Don't puzzle what you see, puzzle what the judge sees. Finished size 68 x 49 cm.
Dozens of similarly drawn cartoon faces packed edge to edge, with large flat areas of grass and pale tent canvas that give very few landmarks.
