One green saguaro down the middle of a chocolate-brown desert night, crowned with white and yellow flowers and drilled with nest holes. Charley Harper puts an elf owl in one and a gila woodpecker below it, then fills the dark around them with a roadrunner and its snake, a scarlet flycatcher, a hummingbird, a swallowtail, a bat and several pairs of yellow eyes. A band of orange sunset runs across the top. It was painted for a US National Park Service poster.
The cactus and the birds come together fast, then a wide expanse of near-black brown remains, broken only by faint silhouettes. Finished size 51 x 68cm.
Large dark areas with minimal detail contrast, though the central cactus and distinct bird shapes provide some guidance.
