A white page scattered with creatures, each cut down to its plainest shape: a brown buck with full antlers in the middle, a green parrotfish, a red seahorse curling its tail, a manatee, a scarlet crab, a beaver, an alligator and a sea turtle, with an octopus, a bat, a pine cone and the root fan of a mangrove filling the gaps. Charley Harper never draws a feather or a scale he can suggest with a line instead.
The animals are quick — one colour, one silhouette — but they float on bare white, and it is those blank pieces that make up the last hour. Finished size 61 x 45.7cm.
Many distinct, colourful animal figures on a white background provide clear shape cues, though the scattered layout and white space add some challenge.
