Mermaid Street in Rye, Sussex is one of those places that stops you in your tracks — and Steve Crisp has captured it absolutely beautifully here. The cobbled street winds uphill past timber-framed cottages draped in ivy and climbing roses, while a glorious sunset paints the sky in shades of deep pink, amber and violet. A crescent moon hangs above it all, hinting that the evening is just beginning.
There's so much life packed into this scene — a couple of dogs trotting along the pavement, residents going about their evening, birds swooping overhead, and warm golden light spilling from cottage windows. It really feels like you could step right into it.
For puzzlers, this one is a proper treat. The rich variety of colour and detail across every inch of the image means there's always something to work on, and the atmospheric sky gives it that extra bit of satisfying challenge. A lovely one to frame when you're done, too.
