Two hands reach across the gap and stop just short of each other. One comes in firm and outstretched, the finger held straight; the other hangs loose and easy, as though its owner has only half woken up and is not quite ready.
Michelangelo leaves the space between them empty, and that small gap is the whole picture. Around it the plaster has aged into cream and grey, with a crack running down from the top edge.
