Brambly Hedge Winter Story 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle by Jill Barklem (Cobble Hill)

The centre panel is the giveaway of a good winter's night: a hollow oak lit from within, snow falling past its windows while the mice tuck into supper by candlelight. Around it, a dozen smaller scenes fill the box lid, from a snowman in the kitchen garden to skaters gliding along a frozen stream and a mouse hauling holly through the drifts.

It's a collage puzzle, so rather than one big picture you're really building twelve or so, each with its own palette and its own little story. That makes the sorting more interesting than a single scene would, though the deep blues of the night sky and the snow-covered thatch will take some patience to untangle.

Jill Barklem's illustrations are as detailed as ever, right down to the acorn-cup crockery and ivy round the doorframes, so this one rewards good light and maybe a magnifying glass for the fiddly bits. The poster included makes checking your progress against the original artwork much easier.
