Here's the whole world as a mapmaker saw it when half of it was still guesswork. Two great circles hold the continents, little sailing ships cross the Mar del Nort and the Mare Pacificum, and a vast Terra Australis Incognita sprawls along the bottom, waiting for somebody to go and find out what is really there.
Four portraits look on from the corners, figures for fire, air, water and earth ride around the border, and the name of Henricus Hondius is lettered across the top. Finished size 69 x 48cm.
The oceans are wide areas of pale parchment crossed by near-identical grid lines, with only small lettering and tiny ships to go on.
