A hand-coloured woodcut from Münster's sixteenth-century Cosmographia, stocked with everything sailors believed was down there: a green serpent chewing a ship's mast, two scarlet lobsters the size of whales with a man clamped in one claw, a bear-headed beast rising off the seabed, a spiny sunfish, sea-pigs, a mermaid, and a long grey serpent winding right across the foot. Printed letters key each creature; a strip of hunting country runs along the top.
Most of the sheet is pale blue-green water drawn in repeated hatching, and that is where the hours go. Finished size 68.6 x 50.8cm.
Wide stretches of repeated wave hatching between the creatures.
