Two great circles hold the world as mapmakers once drew it, ringed in gold and threaded with fine red lines, the lettering all long esses and old spellings — Mar del Zur, the Indian Sea, and a whole southern continent marked Unknowne Land.
Around the edges, robed figures ride through clouds in painted roundels, blazing sun faces glare from the corners, and portrait medallions look down on the oceans. A ship rides the border along the top.
