Late sun catches the tops of Notre-Dame's towers while the front below stays in violet shadow. Maximilien Luce worked the whole scene in small separate dabs in 1900: the mauve sky, the green Seine, the crowds crossing the Pont Saint-Michel, horse-drawn carriages on the quay and a moored barge with its rigging still up.
Painted in dots, so nothing carries a hard edge and both the sky and the water read as large fields of near-identical stipple. Finished size 68 x 51cm.
