A great blue heron built from flat shapes — grey body, white lance-shaped breast plumes, a black crown stripe and a long orange bill — standing on lime green with its reflection dropping below the waterline. Charley Harper filled the space around it with a bumblebee, a monarch, an opossum, a coiled green snake, a nest of blue eggs, a turtle, a mallard, a screech owl and a red salamander. Drawn in 1991 for a nature centre outside Cleveland.
That flat green runs behind everything and carries no detail whatever, so it is the creatures first and then a long, patient fill. Finished size 45.7 x 68.6cm
Bold flat colour blocks, strong geometric shapes, and a dominant bright green background make piece placement relatively easy.
