A heap of scarlet boiled crayfish sits on the white cloth in the foreground, with a pewter coffee pot, a glass decanter and bread beside it. Behind, Carl Larsson's family work the lake around 1895 — children on the jetty and in a rowing boat hauling dip nets, a woman in a headscarf tending a fire, a black three-legged cauldron in the grass, silver birches and pale blue water.
Larsson worked in watercolour, so the grass and the lake are soft washes with little to key on; the crayfish and the birch trunks go in first. Finished size 73.6 x 50.8cm.
Watercolour painting with distinct figures, greenery, and varied elements provides moderate challenge with good colour variation across the scene.
