We are inside Bag End, standing where the reader always stands, and Bilbo is out in the round doorway with his back to us, barefoot on the threshold, working himself up to it. Past him the Shire drops away in green hills and low gold cloud with the sun coming straight at the door. On the desk behind us sit a map, a quill and a mortar and pestle: the ordinary life he is about to walk out of.
Warm hills, warm wood and a great flare of sunlight through the middle of it. Finished size 49 x 69cm
Strong backlight flattens the hills into soft gold, and the dark doorframe is largely featureless.
