A fan opens across the picture and holds night-flowering plants inside it (lily of the valley, lupin, yucca, grape hyacinth, a head of wheat), against panels that darken left to right from daylight blue to near-black. Moths settle over the whole thing: a pale one with eyespots at the left edge, a rust-red cecropia at the right, sphinx moths and small brown ones in between.
The blush-pink border is one large flat field while the moth wings are finely patterned, so the two halves of the box play very differently. Finished size 68.6 x 45.7cm.
The pale border is plain, but the fan panels split the colour clearly.
