The snow is coming down thick in the park and this little choir has turned out anyway! One carries a poinsettia, another strums a guitar, and the girl in the middle sings with her cheeks pink from the cold, while the two at the back share a songbook and try to keep their place.

Their stripy tights, bright boots and patterned ponchos are pure late sixties. It's Charles Saxon's cover for The New Yorker of 16 December 1967, with the 35 cent price still in the corner.

The mottled blue background is dotted with snowflakes and bare trees, but the brightly patterned clothing on the carollers gives plenty of clear colour clues.
