Night Flight by John Dilnot – 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle (Pomegranate)

Rows and rows of moths on solid black: scarlet, coral, dusty mauve, sage and cream, each pair of wings marked with its own fine pattern. John Dilnot built the screen print over six weeks in 2013, starting from a black printed ground and adding layer after layer of opaque colour, working from drawings of real species.

Ranks of near-identical moths against unbroken black make this a proper challenge, sorted by wing marking rather than by colour. Finished size 64 x 50cm.
