The youngest king rides a white horse in gold brocade and a jewelled crown, a crowd of Medici courtiers in red caps pressed close behind him, huntsmen and hounds working the grey terraced rock above. Benozzo Gozzoli painted the fresco for the Medici chapel in Florence around 1459, filling the hillside with orange trees, cypresses, a bounding hare, a deer and a castle on the skyline. He put himself in the crowd on the left, in a red cap.
Dozens of small faces under near-identical red caps, and a great deal of pale grey stone between them, so this one goes slowly. Finished size 64 x 50cm.
Extremely dense detail with many figures, animals, rocks, and foliage throughout the entire image.
