Munch in his sixties, out in the woods at Ekely, painting fast. The elm trunks go straight up the canvas in ochre and grey with the brush hardly lifted, and the forest floor beneath them is a scribble of green, violet and orange put down in short strokes that never quite settle into leaves.
Vertical trunks over a floor of loose broken colour, which is where the hours go. Finished size 69 x 48cm.
The forest floor is an all-over texture of similar short strokes with no landmarks at all.
