The houses at Manarola are stacked straight up the rock in apricot and pink and butter yellow, one balcony above the next, with green terraces stepping up the hill behind them. The cloud is low and grey out to sea, but the light is still coming in warm across the water.
Down at the bottom the boats have been hauled up onto the concrete slip, well clear of the water, and the little harbour has gone perfectly still.
The colourful buildings on the cliffside provide distinct colour zones, but the rocky textures and blue water areas are more uniform and challenging.
