A vast green scaled serpent loops right across the picture and Edward Gorey's people are draped over it like furniture: a man in a straw boater reclining on one coil, a woman in a pink ruffled ballgown, a figure entirely swallowed by a brown fur coat, a small child in plum standing on the creature's back, a bearded man in orange perched on a claw, a woman in a gold gown and pearls sprawled at the bottom right. The wall behind is grey and mauve, stamped over and over with a teal tulip motif.
Gorey works in crosshatch, so most pieces carry a texture rather than a shape, and that repeating mauve wallpaper covers a third of the board: a slow one. Finished size 63.5 x 50.8cm.
The muted lavender background and patterned borders create some uniformity, but the distinct dragon and character shapes provide helpful reference points.
