A hand-coloured seventeenth-century star chart. Constellation figures crowd a grey-blue globe (a golden lion, a scarlet crayfish, a red scorpion, Hydra winding across the middle), while cherubs hold yellow Latin banners above and robed astronomers work below, one turning a gilded armillary sphere beside a walled town.
The globe itself is the work: mesh lines and small white stars over one flat grey tone, where the painted figures and the corner scenes drop in early. Finished size 63.5 x 50.8cm.
The grey globe is one tone crossed by repeating grid lines.
