Monet has stood at the edge of his pond and painted nothing but the water. Lily pads lie across the surface in loose green strokes, pink and magenta blooms open among them, and the blue underneath goes from deep to almost lilac depending on where the light falls.
Up in one corner a warm patch of yellow shows the sky coming down onto the water. There is no bank, no horizon, only the pond, right up close.
