A red-haired woman presses her face into a pale rose growing over a stone wall, eyes closed, in a blue-green gown scattered with small gold motifs. John William Waterhouse painted it in 1908; behind her sit terracotta roof tiles, an arched window and a tangle of dark leaves.
The gown is a broad field of one colour with a repeating pattern, and the foliage is darker still: both slow next to the bright stonework. Finished size 50.8 x 73.7cm.
Rich but distinct colour areas with a clear central figure, though the detailed foliage and textured dress add moderate complexity.
