Bruegel sets the census in a Flemish village in deep winter and lets the biblical part get lost in it. There is a crowd pressed round the inn window on the left where the clerk is writing, carts and barrels being hauled across the frozen river, children on the ice, a pig being butchered, and Mary on a donkey somewhere in the middle of it that most people miss.
