Description

It's a gorgeous day at the seaside, and the surfers are on the lookout for new boards. Your objective in Longboard is to create the largest and most impressive longboards, establishing your surfboard-making business as the most popular in the area. Surf's up!

In this game, players take turns drafting and trading surfboard pieces to construct their boards. Each turn, players can take two actions, with three possible types of actions:

  1. Add a card from the deck to your personal supply, which are the cards placed face up in front of you.
  2. Take a card from your supply to start or expand a board. Each board must consist of cards of the same color (or wild), with each new card added to a board needing to be equal to or greater in value than the one below it.
  3. Put one or more cards from your supply into an opponent's supply, then take a single card from their supply that has a value lower than the sum of the cards you gave them. Use this card to start or expand a board.

Each board card has 1-3 stickers, which count as points when the surfboard is complete, consisting of at least four cards. When a player has 3-4 complete boards, with at least one of them having 7+ cards, they can choose to end the game. If this doesn't happen before the deck runs out, the game ends at that point. Players then score points for stickers on completed boards, lose points for incomplete boards, and score bonus points if they have the longest completed board, the most completed boards, or if they've completed any of the four random objective cards at the start of the game.

How to Play

Surf Shop Board Game Summary

Surf Shop is a board game for 2-4 players, aged 8 and up, with a playtime of 20-30 minutes. The objective is to create the coolest and biggest longboards to establish your surfboard shaping shop as the best in town. The game components include 80 Board Cards, 16 Beach Cards, and 14 Objective Cards.

Setup:

  1. Shuffle all Board cards and place them face down in the middle of the table.
  2. Each player draws 2 cards to form their Supply.
  3. Optionally, place the Beach cards within reach.
  4. Shuffle all Objective cards, lay out 4 random cards face up, and return the remaining ones to the box.
  5. Determine the first player based on the lowest total card value in their supply.

How to Play:

On your turn, take two actions, either the same action twice or two different actions. The actions available are:

  1. Increase Your Supply: Draw one Board card and add it to your Supply.
  2. Start or Extend a Board: Select a card from your Supply and place it in your Build Area. Follow the build rules (same colour and increasing value). Wild cards can be used on any colour but not to start a new board.
  3. Swap a Card and Use It: Transfer one or more cards from your Supply to another player's Supply, and take one card from that player's Supply with a lower total value than the cards you transferred. Immediately use the acquired card in your Build Area.

Objective cards are communal and will score points at the end of the game. A player can only score an objective one time, even if they have met the condition more than once. Multiple players can score the same objective, and if there is a tie for most or least, all tied players score the objective.

Beach Cards (Optional): When a board is shaped (consisting of at least 4 cards), place a Beach card horizontally underneath the first card of the board to act as a base. This card does not count towards the total cards in your board. It is merely an extra thematic touch to the game and can help easily identify shaped boards that will score at the end of the game.

Game End:

The game ends under one of these conditions:

  1. For 2-3 players: A player has 4 shaped boards, with 1 of which containing at least 7 cards.
  2. For 4 players: A player has 3 shaped boards, with 1 of which containing at least 7 cards.
  3. The last Board Card is drawn from the face-down deck at the end of a player's turn.

A player may choose not to end the game, even if they have the ability to do so.

Scoring and Winning:

At the end of the game, each player counts their points as follows:

  • Boards: Shaped boards (consisting of 4 or more cards) count for positive points, based on the number of stickers on each card. Boards containing only 1 card will lose 2 points, and boards containing 2 or 3 cards will lose 1 point.
  • Shop Achievements: 5 points are awarded to the player with the largest number of shaped boards and to the player with the longest shaped board (containing the most Board cards in a single surfboard).
  • Objectives: Points are awarded based on the number listed on each met Objective card.

The player with the highest total score wins and is crowned the best Surf Shop on the beach. In case of a tie, the tied player who has the highest value wild card in a shaped board wins. If there is still a tie for Shop Achievements or Objectives, all tied players receive the points.

Additional Game Variations:

If you're looking to adjust the game's difficulty or add variety to your play experience, consider the following options:

  1. First Game or Easier Game: If you're playing for the first time or prefer an easier game, you can decide to play without the Objective cards. This simplifies the game and focuses on just building your boards and managing your Supply.
  2. Advanced Game: Introduce new Objective cards, house rules, or custom challenges to add complexity and depth to the game. For example, you could create unique objectives that require specific combinations of Board cards or impose limitations on Supply management.
  3. Team Play: In a 4-player game, consider pairing up into two teams of two players each. Team members can strategise together and share their combined scores at the end of the game, promoting cooperation and communication.

Remember that the most important aspect of playing board games is to have fun! Feel free to adapt the rules or introduce new elements to make the game more enjoyable for you and your fellow players.
