Gauguin painted this in his first year in Tahiti and he was already finished with painting things the colour they actually are. The ground is scarlet, a red dog crosses the foreground, two women sit in the middle distance in white and orange, and behind them a group has gathered round a carved figure among flat bands of green and yellow.
Big unbroken areas of one colour each, so the edges between them are what you sort by. Finished size 69 x 48cm.
Broad flat fields of single colours, so progress comes from the boundaries rather than from detail.
