Chagall paints Paris the way it turns up in a dream. The Eiffel Tower stands pale in the middle with a wedge of red and a wedge of pink thrown across the sky behind it, and a small figure in yellow trousers drifts down over the rooftops with his arms out.

A cat with a human face sits on the window ledge watching, two tiny people fly by lying flat on their sides, and in the corner a head looks two ways at once.
