Two women are sitting out on the sand with the sea in a flat green band behind them. The one on the right, in a pink dress, has stopped what she was plaiting and is looking straight out at us, not entirely pleased to be interrupted.
Her friend has bent her head over her own work and carries on regardless, a white flower tucked in her hair. Gauguin has left a few small things scattered on the sand between them — a blossom, a shell, a little box.
